Climate at Malealea

October to April

Summers are hot. Short and intermittent thundershowers and hailstorms with lightening and strong winds are common during the summer season. Most of the rainfall comes in the seven-month summer season from October to April. The peak rainfall period is from December to February. The lowest rainfall occurs in June. In general Lesotho enjoys relatively low humidity, and very clean air.

January is the warmest month with temperatures up to 32°C.

May – September

Winters are generally dry and cold, with clear skies, dry air and warm to moderate temperatures during the day, with sudden cold temperatures just after sunset. Minimum temperatures of around 0°C are common in June, the coldest month, monthly mean temperatures ranging from -3°C to -1°C.

Normal monthly winter minimum temperatures range from –6.3°C in the lowlands to 5.1°C in the highlands. Sub-zero daily minimum temperatures can be reached even in summer both in the lowlands and in the highlands. Snowfalls often occur either at the beginning or the end of the winter season. When it does snow on the ground at Malealea, it’s usually not very thick and melts the next day as soon as the sun comes up. The Thaba Putsoa mountain range in the distance usually stays covered for longer resulting in spectacular views.

Flora

February is a good time to see Redhot Pokers and flowering Aloes
March/April you can see fields of cosmos
September – the country side is dotted pink with peach blossoms

Scenery

The countryside starts becoming green after the first rains usually in October/November.
May to September/October, the countryside is dry and brown with snowcapped mountains at certain times during the winter months.

What to pack

Come prepared for any weather at all times of the year. Always bring long trousers, a warm fleece, rain gear, sunscreen and a hat. It gets very cold during winter from about 4.30pm to 9am with temperatures dropping below zero, so extra warm gear will be needed such as thermal underwear, gloves, warm hats and scarves. The days are usually warmer and you can walk around in t-shirts and shorts for some of the day.
